Methods Engineer

International equipment manufacturer is looking for a Methods Engineer to be based in our Johannesburg site. The candidate must meet the following criteria:

Job description

● As the Methods engineer, you will form part of a multidisciplinary engineering team reporting to the Production Manager. The incumbent will be a qualified engineer with experience in 3D CAD modeling and draughting. The focus of this engineer will be on solving production related issues, by modifying existing mechanical designs as our products evolve or to improve the products. Further to this the production process will also form part of the job. To standardize and improve production methods while ensuring industry best practice is adhered to.

● As the methods engineer you will need to work with the engineering team and the factory staff to solve problems and implement improvements. The ability to deal with suppliers and the production team daily is essential.

● You will be office bound, with minimal travel requirements for work.


● Sheet metal design modifications to existing parts in CAD, preparing drawings, requesting quotations from suppliers, and placing orders through our procurement department.

● Building Mockups or prototypes to prove a concept, then transferring knowledge to factory staff.

● Keep track of latest sheet metal part revisions, and issue new revisions as required.

● Analyze existing products and propose changes for improving quality, performance of product and/or cost reduction.

● Analyze production methods i.e., brazing, welding and general assembly and improve where possible to ensure consistency of quality in parts.

● Design Welding and brazing jigs as required, or the need arises to improve overall assembly in terms of quality, consistency, repeatability, and ease of manufacture.

● Communicating with suppliers to ensure accuracy of products and updating supplier drawings.


● B. Eng (Mechanical Engineering / Mechtronics)

● Minimum 3 years work experience, preferably in CAD design. Ideally in a production environment.

● Proficient at CAD design, especially sheet metal parts: 2D and 3D.

● CAD experience in full assemblies (models), with imported models of outsourced components.

● Own transport

● Excellent interpersonal skills and leadership traits.

● Logical, analytical thinking. Solving problems by deductive and inductive reasoning.

● Excellent at verbal articulation and writing skills.

Advantage: SolidWorks and CATIA working experience


Technical Skills:

● Manufacturing Processes and Equipment

● Understand various manufacturing techniques, machinery, and tools used in refrigeration production.

● Engineering Fundamentals:

● A deep understanding of engineering principles is essential. This includes knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and materials science.

● Process Optimization and Lean Manufacturing:

● Proficiency in lean manufacturing principles (such as Six Sigma or Kaizen) is crucial for streamlining production processes and minimizing waste¹.

● CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

● Process Control.

● Ensure product quality, efficiency, and adherence to industry standards by mastering process control techniques.

● Understand material properties and their suitability for refrigeration components.

● Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Knowledge of FEA helps analyze structural integrity and optimize designs.

● Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer:

● Apply these principles to refrigeration system design and optimization.

● Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics: Understand fluid behavior and its impact on refrigeration systems.

Software Skills:

● MS Office Suite

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) for documentation, data analysis, and communication.

● Google Workspace

● Familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail for collaboration and productivity.

● Project Management Tools: Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Gantt Chart Tools etc..) to oversee projects from conception to completion..

● CAD Software: Proficiency in using CAD tools (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) for creating and modifying technical drawings

Remuneration: R 30,000 / month CTC
